Canadian Emigration: Parliamentary Papers 1826

“Return of the Assessed Value of the Townships in the Newcastle District" in Western Canada, which were settled by Pauper Emigrants from Ireland, between the years 1825 and 1828 at the public expense: Of the number of various Emigration Societies formed in Canada in 1840, by Canadian Proprietors desirous of Settling Emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland upon their Estates. (1848)”.

In total around 260 plots are covered, giving details of over 700 people. While this is a short publication, it is an essential migration resource for those who became known as the Robinson Irish settlers and indeed anyone in Southern Ontario with an Irish family history.

It will offer participants an opportunity to spend time behind the scenes with the Archives' Conservator and Digital Photographer, who will demonstrate techniques for handling and conserving old photographs and documents, as well as options for digitizing and sharing family photographs and other treasures online.

Ottawa, August 30, 2011— The 1871 census marked the first regularly scheduled collection of national statistics, and Library and Archives Canada is now pleased to make its results available online. Researchers can access digitized images of original census returns featuring the name, age, country or province of birth, nationality, religion, and occupation of Canada's residents at the time.

The information covers the four provinces that were part of the Dominion of Canada in 1871: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec.

Access to the digitized images of the 1871 census is available online in two different ways:

Kawartha to Feature Cemetery Transcribing at June Meeting

Kawartha Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, recognizing the need for this ongoing preservation is having a mini workshop on how to record a cemetery. Discussion will show how to lay out a map of the cemetery, family plots, and transcribing the stone information in the proper method for publication.

Alexandra Hartmann (CEO of the Uxbridge Library - wearing green) recounted her all-season visits to the interior of Labrador, elaborating with photos of various landscapes, the remote communities, and the mining operations that she and her husband encountered on their sometimes frightening road trips. She treated the audience to famous Eastern favourites by Purity Foods: Jam Jam Cookies, thick crackers, Rum and Butter/Mollasses Candy Kisses, and a chance to test the hardness of genuine Hard Bread (a.k.a. The Ontario Genealogical Society, Toronto Branch and the Canadiana Department of the North York Central Library will be co-hosting a one-day workshop on sources for Ontario family and local history research.
We are looking for speakers who would like to be part of the workshop.

The theme “Finding Ontario Ancestors” is broad, but presentations should emphasize sources. Your presentation could focus on a single type of record or source, a record group, or demonstrate how several sources can be used together.

You are invited to submit proposals for lectures on any aspect of Ontario genealogical or local history research that fits the above criteria. Speakers will be paid an honorarium of $100 per lecture, plus modest expenses for travel and accommodation.

Volunteer at Conference

OGS Conference 2011 is planned by a volunteer committee but we also need volunteers during the conference to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Volunteering at the Conference is a great way to take part in the festivities if you don’t have the option of registering. Volunteers do have some access to Conference activities simply by being on site while the conference happens.

Also, if you know of or happen to be a high school student looking to get some of the mandatory volunteer hours, this is a great opportunity. We are happy to sign off on volunteer hours for any students who are interested in taking part.

Archives of Ontario will be Extending its Hours of Operation

To the genealogy community and all supporters of the
"Request for Restored Access to Records and Facilities at the Archives of Ontario":
As mentioned in the December message, the Archives of Ontario released the following message on Friday, January 14.

The Archives of Ontario will be extending its hours of operation. Effective Tuesday, February 8, 2011, we will offer extended hours of service on Tuesdays and Thursdays to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Services available during these hours will include registration, assistance from reference archivists, access to self service microfilm, microfiche and finding aids, viewing of previously ordered materials, and access to the exhibit gallery. Requests for certifications, reproductions and copyright that are placed during extended hours will be sent for processing on the next business day.

Extending our hours of operation will allow us to better meet customers’ needs and showcase Ontario’s public and private archival records to new audiences.

It is great news, but that committee would like to add that there is an initial five-month trial period, after which the extended service will be evaluated.
Over the next few months, we must vote with our feet!

Please encourage our O.G.S. colleagues, friends and students to use the Archives.

Picton Burial Site at Isaiah Tubbs Resort is Threatened, Prince Edward County

Just yesterday, the OGS cemetery committee received word of a Notice of Intent published in the December 16th edition of the Picton Gazette. The notice is regarding a burial site at Isaiah Tubbs Resort and Restaurant in Hallowell Township, Prince Edward County.

According to the notice, the Registrar intends to declare the site an “Unapproved Cemetery” and invites representatives of the persons whose remains may still be interred in the former cemetery to contact the Registrar within two weeks after December 23, 2010 (ie by Jan 6, 2011)

Time is short. Please share this information with anyone you know who may have connections with this burial ground.

Bill 126 - An Act to Protect Ontario's Inactive Cemeteries was introduced at the Ontario Legislature on November 2, 2010. The Bill prohibits the relocation of inactive cemeteries despite anything to the contrary in another Act or regulation dealing with cemeteries.

Since cemeteries are an important source of genealogical information, we need your help to get the Bill passed so we can preserve them.

Celebrating the Season with Show and Tell & Holiday Treats The December 7th meeting features a members' 'Show and Tell' followed by time to celebrate the season and to share tasty treats and conversation. Members of the branch/audience have the opportunity to make 5-10 minute presentations of genealogical relevant experiences. Examples could be a brick wall solved or a interesting/significant family artifact or a valuable resource or a valuable archive/repository or interesting, valuable web site(s) or valuable software tool or an unlikely document with genealogical value and so on. There will be a computer with web access to demonstrate a favourite web site or useful tool.
If you wish to present bring your story, items or documents with you. We would appreciate advance notice if possible to either Joyce Lintner (jlintner@sympatico.ca) or Guy Lafontaine (chair.durham.region.ogs@gmail.com). During the Q&A after Grant's interesting presentation about the Carrying Place (trail) Oshawa(Lake Ontario) to Port Perry ( L.Scugog) and on to Beaverton (L. Simcoe) he explained that the amount of information on the topic was now becoming sufficient to consider a book. An audience member suggested that, because some people in the audience had family recollections that could add to this history they could forward their related family stories to Grant. Grant said he would appreciate it and gave permission for his email address be published.

Carrying Place by Grant Karcich
Being sensible, European settlers followed the long-worn paths of Iroquois and Huron-Algonquin natives when finding their way to land grants north of Lake Ontario, establishing many namesake settlements along the way. One particular route, known as "Scugog Carrying Place", starts at Oshawa's Second Marsh (Oshawa and Farewell Creeks), ending at Beaverton on Lake Simcoe, traversing Port Perry and Lake Scugog along the way. [Note: Oshawa means Carrying Place.]
The Toronto and the Quinte Carrying Place routes served a similar function.

Most researchers look in the conventional locations such as, Ancestry, Ontario Archives, familysearch.org(LDS), or Library and Archives Canada and so on. Here is another excellent Ontario resource for information about your French ancestors - SFOHG! - Société Franco-Ontariennes d'Histoires et de Généalogie. The Société has currently NINE resource centres located throughout the province.

I was in the Windsor area at the South West SFOHG Research Centre in Puce where I was continuing my research of my ancestors who settled along Lake Erie and the Detroit River (both US and Canadian sides). The volunteers (bilingual) are very welcoming and eager to assist you in your research. They have a wealth of resources on site and access to paper, microfilm and digital databases not available online.

Explore their web site for yourself to see all that they have, when they are open and how they can assist you.

The closest SFOHG Research Centre to Durham Region is North York Branch of the Toronto Public Library. Email or call the SFOHG to arrange your visit when volunteers are available to help.

Ivy Sucee - Life and Times of Dr. Barnardo

Peterborough's Ivy Sucee, the only Honorary Barnardo Girl in Canada, presented to a full house at our October 5 General Meeting. Her topic, "The Life and Times of Dr. Barnardo" touched the hearts of many in the audience, regardless of their family connections to Home Children. Dickensonian conditions still prevailed in England at the time Dr. Barnardo studied medicine there. His motto - No Destitute Child Refused - improved the quality of life for many of the 30 000 Barnardo children brought to Canada. However, for a number of girls and boys, and unbeknownst to Barnardo, treatment in some of the placement homes could be cruel. Barnardo's organization is the forerunner of, and model for, today's Chidrens' Aid Society.

I just wanted to let you know that the Whitby Archives is hosting a scanning day this Thursday from 1-8 and Saturday from 9-4. The point of Digitization Days is for Whitby residents to bring in Whitby-related historical photographs and I will scan them and add them to our Our Ontario website. The photographs can be any subject, date, type (colour, b/w, negatives, prints, etc.).

Our presenter this month is Ivy Sucee, the daughter of a Barnardo Home Child and the founder and president of the Hazelbrae Barnardo Home Memorial Group. She is the only honorary Barnardo Girl in Canada - a title given to her by the Barnardo Society in England a few years ago.
Ivy will discuss her own dramatic personal research, and also the life and times of Dr. Barnardo. She is very passionate about the stories the thousands of Home Children who came to Canada.

Attention Family Historians! NORFOLKLORE XXXIV, Canada's oldest and original genealogy fair will take place again in Simcoe on Saturday September 25th between 10am and 4pm at the Simcoe Seniors Centre and the Eva Brook Donly Museum & Archives.

Organized by the Norfolk Historical Society, NORFOLKLORE –the Grand Daddy of all Genealogy Fairs-- is celebrating 34 years of sharing resources and information with the family historian.

The Toronto Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society will present a special two-part lecture on Scottish Genealogy on Saturday, 11 September 2010.

Dr. Bruce Durie, noted author and course director of genealogical studies at the University of Strathclyde , will speak on "Inheritance and Law". He will deal with Testaments (including "Wills"), Retours, Sasines, Charters and the other "hidden gems" of Scottish genealogy, and will address basic issues in Palaeography and Latin. He will also suggest relevant resources (such as hard-to-find books on CD).

This lecture will be held at the Burgundy Room, North York Memorial Community Hall, 5110 Yonge Street , Toronto (access from the North York Centre subway station).

So many times we are asked about the types of genealogical microfilms available for research at the Whitby Public Library. It is a good question deserving of an answer. Topics vary from 'older local and Toronto newspapers' to Ontario County and Canadian Census information.' You may not have been aware of the presence of such data. It is tucked in between the Whitby Archives and the Computer Training Lab at the east end of the second floor. On the east wall of this area are several microfilm readers and opposite to them are several cabinets of microfilms. To help you we have provdied a list for download as a PDF. Happy hunting.

Eileen will discuss genealogical research in Germany and the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, focusing on the geographical changes in those areas of Europe that make research more difficult.

In 1867, the Austrian House of Hapsburg agreed with the Kingdom of Hungary to jointly rule their respective territories. This Dual Monarchy lasted for 51 years. Research difficulties arose from the extensive national boundary changes after World War One.

Michael J Leclerc had an interesting research recommendation in the New England Historic Genealogical Society eNews this week for those searching their French-Canadian roots. “The Archives de France, in cooperation with Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) has put together a valuable website for those researching their French-Canadian roots. Archives Canada-France makes available images of almost 40,000 documents pertaining to the history of the French in America. Besides the LAC and BAnQ, documents come from several branches of the Archives de France - the main archives in Paris, the departmental archives of Charente-Maritime, Gironde, Pyrénées-Atlantique, and the Archives nationales d’outre-mer. Sharon is the founder of TIMELINES Genealogical Research. She is a professional genealogical researcher with 28 years experience and the author of two books -- Researching Canadian Vital Statistic Records and Researching Canadian Land Records. She has also designed curricula and serves as an instructor and is also the Head of the Canadian Department for the National Institute of Genealogical Studies Online Courses, University of Toronto. As well, she has been an occasional guest lecturer at the University of Toronto, giving on-site instruction and tours of the Archives of Ontario, Toronto Reference Library and North York Public Library. The Library Archives Canada is also on this list of tours.

Historical records subscription site Footnote is making its US census records free for a limited time.

Footnote spokesperson Justin Schroepfer says there’s not yet a firm ending date, but the records will be free at least through the end of this month. You’ll need to register as a free member to view the records.

Footnote is carrying out plans to host the complete US census back to 1790. Here are the census records on the site so far:

3 percent of 1920
98 percent of 1930

When you find a relative’s record, click the “I’m Related” button for a name on the document to identify yourself as a relative and see others who’ve done the same. You also can see others’ photos, stories and comments related to the record.

Addendum: It may appear as though you need to enter a credit card, but Guy reports that he did get a welcome e-mail even though he did not enter a credit card.

Semaine de généalogie/Genealogy Week, 11-16 July 2010

It is sponsored by Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society and la Société de généalogie de l'Outaouais. The event is modeled after the Toronto Branch OGS' successful Genealogy Summer Camp.

The intent of this program is to bring out-of-town genealogists to Ottawa and Gatineau for a week of tutorials and hands-on research at the many archives and repositories in the area. The group is kept small to allow lots of help from our local members. Registrants fill out an application form which we then review and determine the logical research facilities.

Registrants arrive on Sunday July 11 and we start with a Meet & Greet, with registrants, volunteers and staff from the various research venues. From Monday to Friday, the registrants will be escorted by a volunteer to a research facility. The day starts with a lecture on the facility or a research topic, preferably by the staff but, if not, by a qualified volunteer.

The exact schedule will be determined by the needs of the registrants but our tentative plan would be to start at LAC/CGC on Monday morning. The lecture should run about an hour, after which the registrants would be free to research on their own. There may be volunteers available to help them, depending on the expertise that we can get.

At 4pm, a volunteer would be available to escort the registrants back to their residence (travel probably by bus with us supplying the bus tickets) but they could remain to research on their own.

The rest of the week depends on the individual requirements of the registrants but we have included BAnQ, City of Ottawa Archives (including the UC Archives), and the Anglican Archives or back to an earlier location.

William Robert Holden 1936-2010

Robert was a former member of the Whitby-Oshawa branch of the OGS who explored his Holden-Luke ancestry, preserved old fire trucks and Muskoka boats, and, as an adult, returned to his boyhood love of Scouting and the outdoors, after some years in retail, on the staff at Camp Samac. On Feb 25, at Golden Plough Lodge in Cobourg, he went on to a better place.

His funeral has been arranged at the McIntosh Funeral Home at 152 King Street, East, Oshawa which is built around the former Luke, then Holden, family home where he grew up. Visitation will be Monday, March 1 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held on Tuesday March 2 at 11:00 a.m.

Family Day Open House a Success!!

On Monday, 15 February O.G.S. Durham Region Branch held it's first ever Family Day Open House. The turnout was wonderful. More than thirty people visited between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Some visitors stayed for an hour and some for a few hours. Twelve Durham member volunteers welcomed our guests and worked very hard throughout the day assisting them with their genealogy questions. The office was filled with energy all day. Frequently there were as many as twenty people discussing, working on the Web, reading reference materials or for some filling out an ancestor chart for the first time. During the day people crowded around nine computers locating their genealogical information on the Internet. It was an enjoyable day for all participants.
Congratulations to Bill and Loraine Hall of Ajax who won a 2010 Ontario Genealogical Society and Durham Region Branch memberships.

DRB - OGS January 5th Branch Meeting in Oshawa

Stewart Boden, Outreach Officer drove for nearly three hours through the snow and heavy traffic on Tuesday evening and then delivered an excellent, informative, and entertaining presentation to our audience. Archives of Ontario's Outreach initiative definitely 'grabbed' Durham genealogists. There was renewed excitement about the resources, services and opportunities available to genealogists wanting to use the Archives of Ontario for research. Eyes widened as new features such as digital enhancement of microfilms, the client lounge, the exhibition space, the spacious reading room, and the new classroom were shown. The Archives of Ontario's new web site's features are impressive. Because of his presentation many are already planning their visit to the new Archives of Ontario.

A brand new and extremely informative presentation introducing to the Archives of Ontario, its new building, and the collections and services that will be of interest to genealogists. Stewart will discuss how to research at the Archives, and about the different ways to access some of the most popular records held there. For those who are already familiar with the AO, the presentation will review some of the most important changes that have been made in the past year, including the redesigned website and the expanding educational programming.

Stewart Boden has been at the Archives of Ontario since 2001. He spent five years as a Reference Archivist, helping researchers find and use photographic, architectural and cartographic records. His passion for archival advocacy led him to his current position as Outreach Officer, a job he has been doing since January 2007.

It was a pleasure this morning to read in the Toronto Star about Brian and his career . . . journalist, historian and Town of Whitby archivist. An elementary history teacher sparked Brian's interest which he turned into a career. Well done Brian.

Durham's December Branch heard member presentations at its final meeting of the calendar year 2009.

Some members brought various family ephemera including jewelry, historical county atlas, medals, war ration books and even a unique spoon holder. These family artifacts helped paint a picture of the period when their ancestors were living. They demonstrated the community and familial interaction during various times of their families' histories.

Another member told the story of keeping track of a grandmother's residences. The difficulty was not where she was living but the time of day that she chose to move out or to move in, at times peculiar.

Two members demonstrated in separate presentations how their research helped them discover living 3rd and 4th cousins. This was not just a genealogical discovery but also the finding of new colleagues in research.

Another' s ancestor was a political prisoner in the 1837 Upper Canada rebellion. The curiosity was an elaborate wooden gift box carved during his stay in prison. It appears many prisoners may have occupied themselves with similar carving/engraving projects - interesting security implications too.
