Announcing a New Certificate Design Competition

Create a design for a new Heritage Society certificate for The Ontario Genealogical Society.

As an addition to our current heritage clubs and societies, OGS is developing the Fathers of Confederation Society for those who can prove they are descended from one of Canada’s iconic Fathers of Confederation.

We need a striking certificate for members of the Fathers of Confederation Society to proudly display.

Prize: $500

(donated in memory of Mike Brede)

Design Criteria

Each 8.5” x 11” certificate design must have:

• The OGS logo present somewhere on the certificate (.jpg of the logo may be obtained by contacting OGS provincial office provoffice@ogs.on.ca)
• Space for the name(s) of applicant(s)
• Space for the name of qualifying ancestor
• Space for the date of issue and signature of the OGS president
• Room for the OGS seal measuring 5.5 cm in diameter

The Durham Region branch has been served by many dedicated volunteers since 1982.  They have been answering queries, organizing meetings, collecting local genealogical information, providing assistance to members, operating our office, organizing/presenting workshops/conferences and much, much more. During the last few years members’ volunteerism has been decreasing.  For these and other services to continue we encourage you to volunteer for the Executive or any Council Committees.  Volunteering rewards you and your fellow members.  Two members may share a role.

Topic:      T.O.N.I. (The Ontario Name Index) This O.G.S. project is creating an Index based on the collected O.G.S. data bases.  It shows where information about a particular name can be found.  TONI will quickly become large – perhaps as many as fifty million entries.  Currently available records are abou 546,356.  Note that this is an index – it does not contain the information, just tells you where to find the information.  TONI will be on the public part of the OGS website.  Fraser is a retired engineer and university administrator who has been involved in genealogy for about 25 years.  He is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists.  For many years Fraser was the Executive Director of OGS.

Genealogy Summer Camp

Toronto, 12-17August 2012

Toronto Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society

Genealogy Summer Camp is a unique program (for adults) that brings out-of-town family historians to Toronto for an intensive week of tutorials and hands-on research at the many archives and reference libraries in the city. If you have ancestors from Toronto or other parts of Ontario, there are many resources here for you. Local family historians are also welcome to participate as “day campers”.

We take full advantage of Toronto’s great public transit system, and we keep the group small to allow lots of help from our local experts.

We’ll help you spend more time finding information about your ancestors —and less time finding the archives.

This will be our 16^th Summer Camp. More than 125 participants from England, right across Canada and many US states have attended the 15 previous Summer Camps—some more than once!

Genealogy “Summer Camp” 2012 will take place from August 12-17. The Summer Camp fee for 2012 is $230 (Cdn), which covers approximately 7 hours of lectures and tutorials, 25 hours of hands-on instruction and all worksheets and handouts.

Bessie Gannon 1920-2012

Bessie Gannon, a founder and longtime valued member of the branch, died on Friday, April 13, 2012, at 91.
Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 on Tuesday - funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Oshawa Funeral Home.
We will post photos/video soon, on the main page of the branch website.

Bay of Quinte Branch UEL - Loyalist Roots Workshop

The Bay of Quinte Branch will be presenting a workshop to help people find their Loyalist Roots on SATURDAY APRIL 21st, 2012 at the Adolphustown Township Hall in Adolphustown, located on old Highway #33, the Loyalist Parkway. We invite anyone doing research on their Quinte area ancestors to come out for help with their Loyalist links, and to bring along any other individuals who may be interested to discover their Loyalist connections.

The program begins at 10:00AM and runs throughout the day until 3:00PM. People may feel free to come at any time throughout the day. Those in attendance will receive several handouts, including application forms and tips for Loyalist Lineage, a list of UEL names for the Bay of Quinte area, examples of acceptable proofs and where to find them, and a certificate of participation. There will also be tours of the UEL Museum, research library and the park including a visit to the UEL Cemetery and site of the original Loyalist Landing.

There will also be a series of short talks on researching your links during the morning by Linda Corupe, Peter and Angela Johnson, and Brian Tackaberry. We will also have them available later to give you one-on-one assistance with your family search. There will also be books for sale to help with your Loyalist research.

The cost for the day is $10 which will include the handouts, coffee/tea/water and certificate. You are asked to bring along a bag lunch for the day. Preserving Family History - April 4 - Oshawa

Are you the unofficial family archivist?
Join the Durham Region Area Archives Group in celebrating Archives Awareness Week from April 2 to 6.
The group will be offering a 'Preserving Your Family History' event from 2 to 8 p.m. on April 4 at the Northview Branch of the Oshawa Public Library, 150 Beatrice St. E.
Professional archivists and local history librarians will be on hand to answer questions about genealogy, document and photograph preservation, digitization, and document repair.
There will also be digitization and encapsulation demonstrations and helpful tips on how best to store your family collection.
Residents are encouraged to bring along their family photos and documents.

Canadian Emigration: Parliamentary Papers 1826

“Return of the Assessed Value of the Townships in the Newcastle District" in Western Canada, which were settled by Pauper Emigrants from Ireland, between the years 1825 and 1828 at the public expense: Of the number of various Emigration Societies formed in Canada in 1840, by Canadian Proprietors desirous of Settling Emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland upon their Estates. (1848)”.


In total around 260 plots are covered, giving details of over 700 people. While this is a short publication, it is an essential migration resource for those who became known as the Robinson Irish settlers and indeed anyone in Southern Ontario with an Irish family history.
